Romania    Romania     (Transylvania/Erdely)

This time, we will focus on Transylvania the rather well known part of the country.  I now have relatives there, due to an ingenious alliance through marriage.   For the last couple of decades, Transylvanians were much less worried about vampires, and a lot more afraid of the late leader Caesescu.  In a few action packed days in '89 the government was forced out and the leadership taken care of swiftly.

Transylvania is a beautifully natural place, with deep forests and  bitterly cold winters.  Technology has not caught up with all parts of the countryside as I saw ox-carts and similar old-school insruments at work.  Agriculture is sometimes a very manual process, but I suppose it keeps people employed.

Some visitors in Transylvania look for horrific creatures or Dracula's grave.  I took the easy way out instead and surveyed the Hungarian roots of the area.   This involved eating wholesome foods, including bacon, milk curd, corn meal, onions, rusty spring water and palinka.  And that's just for apetizer...

Wholesom foods To well prepare for a strenuous hike I am eating goose liver with a Transylvanian hockey player.  In a town called Udvarhely.

Due to the high elevation and the thin air, my heart was beating 180/min when I got to the top.  (I measured it.)  The local champion however did not feel the strain.
