One of the few places on earth where you can surf and ski in the same day.  I have done this and some more on a warm spring day in '98 after years of planning.  My activity for that day started out with hitting the slopes at Mountain High with our usual possey.  Midday I went down to the high desert near Phelan to join my soaring team for a  spin in a glider plane.  Back for an afternoon of skiing and later, having returned to Newport Beach, I went for a quick surf.   Meanwhile the kids were gathering at the Rocking Lobster eatery, where long lines and decent  seafood were served.  The planned all night party was cut short by my drowsiness.  Unfortunately, not many pictures were taken on this eventful day, so you'll just have to trust me.

Here are some shots from our recent California (mis)adventure.   Our destination was a place most representative of the California climate: Death Valley.  Most Californians would not dream of visiting this place, but plenty of German and other foreign tourists pass through here.

The arid beauty of it all... Furnace Creek. Csabi is running around in circles, as we get lost in the sand.  For navigation we relied on skills left form his legionnaire days.
I licked the salty deposits for lack of better. We still pretend to be happy when the temperature is 110 F (43 Celsius).
