Mexico

The Yucatan peninsula has some of the greatest Mayan structures, much of which is still unexcavated. Reliable public transportation is available for discovering all of these sites. We took a bus from the Belize border town of Chetumal to Merida and along the coast. Merida is a colonial town with nice architecture and provides a good base for exploring some major Mayan complexes. It's good to avoid the crowds by arriving in off-peak hours to Uxmal, Chichen Itza and Tulum. While we were here in October, the air was quite hot and humid. Still, it's possible to jog up the Serpent Temple in 56 seconds.

Uxmal
Cozumel - Trouble in Paradise.
Cozumel is nice while the cruise ships aren't in port. When they are, the place is worse than Disneyland in the summer. People raid the curio shops and the tequila bars in hordes and rush back to the midnight buffets.
Trick or treating in Cozumel with plenty of Coronas. Beers of Mexico.
The diving is
excellent and the water is warm. As you can see I
have worked out.
Sideshow Bob's speed boat was the aptly named "Brain Damage II". A full day of mishaps included Sideshow running out of air under water and a few car breakdowns. We started out with Sideshow picking us up on a street corner. I hopped into the back of his rusty VW pickup between some gas containers that we filled up. At the marina a huge fireball shot out from the outboard engine. On the way home he overloaded the truck with me and five Mexican guys in the back and the truck broke down twice. Sideshow went under to fix things and apologized repeatedly. We were not worried, we were drinking...
Tulum
Tulum Beach with Mayan condos. It is the only major Mayan structure on the Yucatan coast. When you're at Tulum, don't forget your bathing suit. That's the only way of getting to the beach under the ruins.

| La Fonda A very fine restaurant that you'll never find. Halfway between Rosarito and Ensenada, past Puerto Nuevo. Come with a big appetite because the food is great and the portions are huge. It was closed permanently (?) in 2001. |
